An ongoing story towards self-sustainability


Nema Mercy Centre Children’s Home, an orphanage located in Nairobi, Kenya, has been hit particularly hard by COVID-19. Due to the global health crisis and quarantine order, the price of food has skyrocketed. Although cows purchased prior to the pandemic produce 2 gallons of milk per day, this is not enough to pay for the Home’s living expenses and operations.


In efforts to help the Children’s Home become self-sustainable during this challenging time, David Michael Smith of Friends of Copper Canyon started a fundraiser with aims to purchase more livestock for the Home. Chickens, for example, can produce eggs which can help pay for food and the children’s education.


Carepak actively participated in the fundraiser and as a result, the Centre was able to purchase 300 chicks, 100 chickens, chicken feed, and 2 rabbits. Additionally, the funds were able to pay for rent and secure food and water.
