Ongoing efforts to support the hopes and dreams of children at By Grace

By Grace Disabled and Orphans Centre (By Grace) is located in Kayole, Kenya. Kayole is the second largest slum in Kenya, second to the notorious Kibera slum. Many in Kayole are homeless and children are left as orphans due to the AIDS epidemic. The streets are largely unpaved and cluttered with garbage, sewage, goats, and chickens. Many homes lack the basic necessities, such as running water or electricity. Unemployment rates are high, consistently over 50%. Families in the Kayole slum cannot afford to send their children to school. There are a myriad of children living in the streets who are often exploited and abused.

By Grace was started in 2001 by a Kenyan woman named Salome W. Maturi. Complications with her pregnancy led her to make a promise with God - she vowed to devote her life to caring for children in need if she could successfully carry her child to full term. After her pregnancy, she began caring for homeless orphans who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, tribal conflicts, and domestic violence.

In a place of desperation and suffering, By Grace symbolizes immense hope and courage. Today, there are over 250 children at the Centre. Despite their hardships, the students give their 100%, supporting and encouraging one another to move forwards towards a better, brighter future.

Children at By Grace Disabled and Orphans Centre are still in dire need for more textbooks and teachers. Additionally, the Centre is operating without running water and flushing toilets. In order to sustain the facility and provide adequate education for the children, there is so much more that needs to be done.
